Facilities
This property has a private sun terrace with a heated swimming pool, a garden, a front deck with breath-taking views and an interior patio for total privacy to relax in. An exquisite clean design where concrete, glass windows and wood decks blend perfectly. THE SAND with its iconic mid-century modern classics is a never ending "art project". The suspended fireplace and heated floor make it irresistible throughout the year and ideal for off season breaks. This fully equipped house has 3 bedrooms accommodating 6 people and only one hour from Lisbon International Airport.
THE POOL
On top of the house lies a sun terrace with a stunning private heated swimming pool. The concrete pool was finished with aqua bright onyx for an exquisite look and feel. This spacious terrace has an elevated position to ensure maximum privacy to sunbathe and relax. From here you can watch the sunset while hearing the sound of the ocean facing the green crops field and the Arrabida Mountains. The controlled temperature pool allows night swimming under the starry sky.
THE GARDEN
The concept of the garden is to merge with the surrounding territory, through the choice of native species. The land is sculptured like a sand dune, sprinkled with typical beach species that creates an effortless unpretentious landscape.
BEACH & SURROUNDINGS
The house is a few meters away from the beach which has been awarded the best in Portugal for many years for its water quality and clean silky sand. The beach is a long sand line that can provide great privacy if that is what you are looking for - the perfect place to get away from the crowds and get into the wild but with the advantage of the nearby excellent restaurant Sal nestled.
Your 5 minute walk to the beach is a true countryside experience. The property sits in front of a very large crop field ideal for long walks or running. A few kilometres away are small towns like Comporta and if you want to go back in time visit the Palafitic dock - this old fishermen pier is unique in the whole of Europe and despite its fragile look has lasted for decades and really is worth seeing.

10 things you may not know about Portugal
1. In the early 18th Century the English turned to Portugal to supply them with wine on account of them fighting a war with France. Wine however could not last the voyage without going off so was fortified with brandy. The beverage thence became known as Porto [or port]. Also over half the world’s cork production is sourced from Portugal.
2. It was first established as a country in the 12th Century and has had the same defined borders since 1139 making it the oldest nation in Europe.
3. The world’s only ‘international’ zipline stretches between two villages - one in Portugal and the other in Spain. Creator of the ‘límite zero’ David Jarman said "two villages in two countries separated by a river 150 metres wide – a zipline just seemed obvious to me”!
4. Portugal is famous for its pastry making. Pastéis de nata is one of the most popular and were first made in the 17th Century when monks used leftover egg yolks from starching their habits to create sweet cakes and pastries. These were sold to passers by outside the monasteries to generate a little extra revenue.
5. The world record for the largest dining table was set when around 16,000 guests were served lunch at a five kilometre long table on the Vasco da Gama bridge. The event was staged by a washing liquid company that promised to do the subsequent washing up using a mere litre of its new product!
6. Portugal’s weather is known as the hottest in Europe, with nearly 3000 sunny hours per year.
7. The Anglo Portuguese alliance is the oldest in the world first ratified as a treaty in 1373 and solidified as a mutual alliance in 1386.
8. The shrine of Fatima is a popular pilgrimage spot for Christian communities and in terms of volume of visiting pilgrims it is second only to Rome in Europe. Fatima receives four to five million pilgrims a year.
9. From 1808 to 1821, and after Napoleon invaded the country the capital of Portugal was Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
10. Portugal saw the first ever flight of a hot air balloon. In 1709 a Brazilian priest elevated himself four meters above the ground in front of King John V and the Portuguese court in Lisbon. However, at that time the notion of a flying man was so preposterous that the priest was accused of witchcraft and consequently persecuted!
I am not entirely sure I want to share this gem with anyone else
First off this is the first time I have bothered to review a holiday accommodation and secondly I am not entirely sure I want to share this gem with anyone else. But in the spirit in which we were received by the most gracious hosts of THE PLANTATION I feel duty bound to take the time to give credit where it is due.
The property itself is of course stunning. Look at the pictures. It does not disappoint in the flesh and nor is it photographed omitting noisy neighbours or ugly views. Secluded, subtle and an oasis of peaceful calm. Most previous reviews mention the fireflies on the lawn of an evening. I now understand why. Impossible to put into words or indeed film or photograph. What most don’t mention is the incredible calm of early morning there.
Good architectural fore thought meant my family of five ‘lived’ easily in this space. The space works very well. Location wise very convenient for Merida and the week barely gave us time to scratch the surface of all the sites within day trip distance. Utterly genuine honest hosts who are as enthused by the houses as we were. A rare find and a true ‘keeper’.

Best vacation ever
We had the absolute best vacation at this gorgeous property. Everything was perfect. I have rented many many houses and villas over the years and by far, was the most responsive and considerate of all that I have rented. Arranged for daily cleaning and a chef to come twice. The experience could not have been better and the house is even better than it looks in the pictures. Its a gorgeous, magazine-spread-worthy home. As a Senior Vice President at The New York Times i have travelled the world and was seriously impressed, we cant wait to return!
September 2015 | THE SAND I Portugal
THE PLANTATION is an architectural masterpiece and without doubt the most incredible place we ever imagined staying! Amazingly when we arrived it was even more astounding than we thought possible. Everything about the property and gardens was completely effortless. Everything was where you wanted it to be if you had designed it specifically for yourself! The kitchen, sunken lounge area, pool, bedrooms and huge open windows all set off by the elegant and stylish furnishings. Around every corner is another interesting view or stunning vista. This alone would have made our honeymoon stay unforgettable. However, we also had the incredible service and attention from the the owner and the ladies and gentlemen who prepared our food, kept the house spotless and the gardens effortlessly manicured. The location is also perfect for exploring the area, though, once you arrive it is almost impossible to leave the house. Finally I actually cannot believe the incredible value of it. We have paid 4 or 5 times this to stay in places that will not hold such as happy place in our heart.
