THE ESCAPE
This house has a spacious, comfortable and calm atmosphere with a mix of unique contemporary and retro decor with a bonus of this property being environmentally conscious having solar panels supplying the majority of its electricity. Your first impression will be on the entire ground floor having the the most amazing flagstones, everyone who has visited over the years remarks on how beautifully big they are, with a very good chance that they may have come from Glastonbury Abbey during the Reformation.Off the entrance hall you find the kitchen with inglenook fireplace and flagstone floor with an archway leading into a sunny south facing living room and dining room. With copper dining table one end and big velvet sofas around a log burner set inside a marble fireplace the other, the space is sumptuously relaxed. Wide stairs from the entrance hall lead up to the first floor and Bedroom 1 where the sunshine streams in and you will find a superking/twin beds with en-suite shower room. The double aspect Bedroom 2 with views to the Mendip Hills at the front and the river and garden at the back. With a kingsize bed, freestanding bath and en-suite loo and living area. Climb the stairs to the second floor and be surprised by the very large third bedroom set up in the eaves with views of the Glastonbury Tor with an en-suite shower room and loo, kingsize bed and two single beds. Outside is a small south facing cottage garden with lawn, wood store and a mature Magnolia and apple tree to sit under around the refectory table for outside dining or sundowners.
The property is set in a small village on the Somerset Levels 5 miles from the historic city of Wells and 4 miles from Glastonbury with its famous Tor. There is a fantastic village pub with excellent food, live music and a remarkable atmosphere just a few steps away - grab a drink on the jetty next to the river or ensconce yourself by a roaring fire and listen to the sounds. One notable point to make of this hamlet on the Levels is that there is no light pollution, noise or traffic [even in the distance!] thus bringing a notable amount of wildlife in the murmurations of Starlings, Kingfishers, Barn Owls and Otters on the river to this peaceful area. There are wildlife reserves within walking distance where you can visit with a flask of something warm and seek out a hide to sit and take in the surrounding. Otherwise a stay in Somerset is not to be undertaken without a visit to one of the authentic cider farms - one of which is a 10 minutes drive away. With the cities of Bath and Bristol just under an hour away and the market town of Frome close by with its array of vintage shops and the smallest city in England [Wells] the closest of them all where a number of notable events are held through the year. Worth a visit also is the latest opening of the famous Hauser & Wirth Gallery with their brilliant Roth Bar & Grill in Bruton. For those keen to keep their shopping hand busy there is the emporium that is Kilver Court in Shepton Mallet with a selection of high end boutiques and farm shop owned by the founder of Mulberry which incidentally have a factory store alongside or there is Clarks Village at Street 15 minutes drive away.
Travel: Nearest train stations are Castle Cary or Bristol Temple Meads / Bristol Airport 30 minutes drive away / Bicycle hire 5 minutes away
Things to Note: Complementary basket of logs / Welcome hamper [with local produce of bread, milk, butter, cheese and cider or fresh apple juice] / locally produced Bramley body products [handmade and free from parabens, sulphates and petrochemicals] / Belgian cotton and French linen bedlinen
I am not entirely sure I want to share this gem with anyone else
First off this is the first time I have bothered to review a holiday accomodation and secondly I am not entirely sure I want to share this gem with anyone else. But in the spirit in which we were received by the most gracious hosts of THE PLANTATIONl I feel duty bound to take the time to give credit where it is due.
The property itself is of course stunning. Look at the pictures. It does not disappoint in the flesh and nor is it photographed omitting noisy neighbours or ugly views. Secluded, subtle and an oasis of peaceful calm. Most previous reviews mention the fireflies on the lawn of an evening. I now understand why. Impossible to put into words or indeed film or photograph. What most don’t mention is the incredible calm of early morning there.
Good architectural fore thought meant my family of five ‘lived’ easily in this space. The space works very well. Location wise very convenient for Merida and the week barely gave us time to scratch the surface of all the sites within day trip distance. Utterly genuine honest hosts who are as enthused by the houses as we were. A rare find and a true ‘keeper’.
